U.S. Embassy Conducts Annual Blood Drive for Tunisia

The U.S. Embassy in Tunisia, in cooperation with the “Centre National de Transfusion Sanguine”, conducted its annual blood drive on February 14, 2012, collecting enough blood to save 35 lives. The first to donate was Ambassador Gordon Gray; staff of the American Embassy, the American Cooperative School of Tunis, and others from the American and diplomatic communities followed his lead.

The Embassy’s partner, the “Centre National de Transfusion Sanguine” (CNTS), is the sole civilian supplier of blood to hospitals and healthcare centers across the country. Blood donation is entirely anonymous, voluntary, and compensation- free. Blood collected from the U.S. Embassy will be screened and processed at the central blood bank and sent to whoever is in need throughout Tunisia.

Ambassador Gray noted that the Embassy’s annual blood drive, which in 2012 falls during “American Heart Month,” which raises awareness about heart disease, provided tremendous support to the CNTS and to the Tunisian people. “We have a strong partnership with CNTS, and I am very happy that we can continue our collaboration this year.” Embassy medical officer Grant Ludwig expressed his deep appreciation for the Center’s activities, saying, “the U.S. Embassy is proud to support the Tunisian Blood Transfusion Center, which is an important partner in our efforts to assist those in need in Tunisia.”
